Things you STILL don’t know about calories
You’ll usually hear of calories as something to do with food. But it’s not just about that. Calorie is a unit of energy which applies to almost anything that contains, well, energy such as gasoline. You heard it right, gasoline contains calories.
Here are facts about calories that has nothing to do with weight gain:
1. A slice of cherry cheesecake could light a 60-watts lightbulb for 1.5 hours
=
2. Calories of 217 Big Macs could fuel a car to motion for 88 hours
=
3. A gallon of gasoline contains 31,000,000 calories
But since we don’t drink gasoline, let’s shift to facts about calories that only a chosen few know. The calorie content is measured by the number of potential energy a food possesses. It is important to know how many carbohydrates , fats, and proteins are in any given food to get how many calories or energy it contains. So, here’s the calorie math:
1. Food containing 1 gram of carbohydrates, 1 gram of protein, and 1 gram of fat contains 17 calories.
2. A gram of carbohydrates and proteins contains 4 calories
3. A gram of fat alone contains 9 calories
4. 3,500 calories corresponds to 1 pound of fat.
There is a computation to know how many calories are burned. It is not simply telling that jogging will burn this amount of calorie. For instance, for aerobics, one has to compute .8 x (how long you did the activity) x (body weight) to know how many calories are consumed. .8 is the estimated kilocalorie burned per minute per kilogram of the body weight of a person.
Likewise, calorie intake depends on several factors such as weight, height, and health of a person. It is still best to consult health and nutrition professionals to know more about how much one needs and burns in a certain activity.
